Allah Himself specified the eight groups eligible to receive Zakat in Surah At-Tawbah (9:60). Zakat must be given directly to these exact categories.
“Zakat is only for the poor, the needy, those who collect it, bringing hearts together, freeing captives, those in debt, in the cause of Allah, and the stranded traveler. This is an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.”Surah At-Tawbah · 9:60
People who have virtually no income or belongings, and cannot afford basic necessities like food, clean water, or safe shelter.
People who earn a living, but their income is not enough to cover basic daily living expenses. They do not beg out of dignity.
Trustworthy workers hired by legitimate charities to collect, account for, safeguard, and deliver Zakat to verified recipients.
New Muslims who lost family or financial support after accepting Islam, or individuals whose hearts need encouragement and care.
Historically used to free slaves. Today, scholars apply this to rescue victims of human trafficking and modern forced labor.
People overwhelmed by unavoidable debt from basic survival needs, emergency medical care, or natural disasters, with no way to repay.
