Your body doesn't care how many hours you sleep as much as it cares when you sleep them. Eight hours starting at 2 a.m. is not the same eight hours as one starting at 10 p.m. — not to your heart, your hormones, or your memory.
In 2021, researchers strapped wrist accelerometers to 88,026 UK Biobank participants and tracked their cardiovascular health for roughly six years. They weren't measuring sleep length. They were measuring sleep onset time.
The relationship turned out to be U-shaped: falling asleep in the 10 p.m.–11 p.m. hour was associated with the lowest incidence of cardiovascular disease. Going to bed later was worse — and so was going to bed much earlier, which often signals a clock that has drifted out of alignment.
Observational association, not proof of cause — night owls also tend to get less light, less exercise and more artificial light at night. But the signal is consistent, dose-dependent, and it lines up neatly with what we know about the biological clock.

Sleep arrives in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and waking mid-cycle — especially mid-deep-sleep — is what produces that concrete-in-the-skull feeling. So pick the hour you must be up, then count backwards in whole cycles.
Cycle length varies (70–120 min) and lengthens through the night, so treat these as targets, not timetables. Consistency beats precision every time.
Deep sleep (N3) is front-loaded — it dominates the first half of the night, repairing the body and consolidating facts. REM sleep is back-loaded — it swells in the final cycles, doing emotional processing and creative recombination. Which means trimming the end of your night doesn't trim sleep evenly. It disproportionately deletes your dreaming.

Sleeping 1 a.m.–9 a.m. on weekends and 11 p.m.–6:30 a.m. on weekdays means you fly two time zones east every Monday — without ever leaving your bed. Chronobiologist Till Roenneberg named this social jet lag, and it tracks with worse mood, metabolism and performance.
You can't will yourself asleep, but you can make the conditions inevitable. Tick off what you'll actually do — think of it as descending, not switching off.
Ten p.m. is the population average. Your chronotype nudges it. But the single most powerful variable isn't the number on the clock at all — it's regularity. A steady wake-up time, morning light in your eyes, and darkness at night will do more for you than any perfectly-calculated bedtime you keep only twice a week.
