Quranic Arabic · How Words Actually Work
Arabic isn't just a list of random words to memorize — it's a living forest. You plant just three letters into the soil, and dozens of words grow out of them. Once you understand the root, the Quran stops feeling like a foreign dictionary and starts speaking to you directly, page after page.
كَشَجَرَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاءِ
“…like a good tree: its root (أَصْل) is firm and its branch (فَرْع) is in the sky.” — Ibrāhīm 14:24
Tip: Hover over or tap any glowing leaf — every single one is an actual word from the Quran.
The Core Concept
In Arabic, almost every word goes back to a جَذْر (root) — usually three basic letters holding one core concept. From there, Arabic pours those three letters into different molds called أَوْزَان (patterns) to build actions, people doing the action, places, tools, and qualities. That's why Arabic feels endlessly rich, yet makes complete, logical sense once you see the system.
Learn just three letters like ك ت ب (writing), and you suddenly unlock a whole family: كَتَبَ (he wrote), كِتَاب (book), كَاتِب (writer), مَكْتُوب (written decree), مَكْتَب (desk), and مَكْتَبَة (library). You learn one seed, and you get a dozen words for free.
Here is the secret: you don't need to memorize thousands of separate vocabulary words. Roughly 300 to 500 common roots make up about 80% of the entire Quran. Learn a couple of roots a week, and within a year your entire recitation changes.
Every root paints a vivid picture. Take رَحْمَة (mercy). It comes from the exact same root as رَحِم (the womb) — a love that surrounds, protects, feeds, and cares for you before you can even ask. Translations just say 'mercy', but the Arabic makes you feel it in your bones.
Figures are widely-cited approximations (Qur'ānic Arabic Corpus; al-Muʿjam al-Mufahras of ʿAbd al-Bāqī). Use them as motivation to see just how accessible the language really is.
The Anatomy of a Word · تَشْرِيحُ الشَّجَرَة
Classical scholars didn't talk about sterile grammar rules — they actually spoke in tree metaphors: أَصْل (the root), فَرْع (the branch), and اِشْتِقَاق (derivation, like a shoot splitting off from a stem). Tap the glowing numbers on the tree to see how every layer works.
Sketch this tree once on the board and you can use it all year long: 3 letters down in the soil → trunk = core meaning → branches = patterns → leaves = specific words in the ayah → fruit = personal reflection and action.

The Peeling Method · كَيْفَ نَجِدُ الجَذْر
Think of it like peeling an orange. The 3-letter root is the sweet fruit in the middle; everything else around it is just skin, peel, and wrapping.
Remove attached particles and pronouns glued to the edges: وَ، فَ، بِ، كَ، لِ، أَ، ال at the front, and ـهُ، ـهَا، ـهُمْ، ـكُمْ، ـنَا، ـونَ، ـينَ، ـاتِ، ـتُ at the end.
Now look for the letters that belong to the mold itself: مُـ / مَـ, تَـ, اسْتَـ, انْـ, ـا ـ, ـيـ, and the doubling shaddah.
You should now be holding exactly three solid consonants in their original order (occasionally 4, like زَلْزَلَ ← ز ل ز ل). The letter order never flips.
Can you think of any other familiar Quranic words using those three letters? غ ف ر ← غَفُور، مَغْفِرَة، اِسْتَغْفَرَ ✔ If the meanings match the context of the ayah, you've nailed the root.

سَأَلْتُمُونِيهَا
“You asked me for it” (سَأَلْتُمُونِيهَا). Ancient Arabic grammarians gathered all the letters that can ever be added onto a root into this single memorable sentence. If an extra letter is attached to a word, it will always be one of these ten. If it's NOT one of these ten, you know for sure it's part of the root!
⚠ Watch out: these letters can also be part of a real root (like س ل م, أ م ن, or و ق ي). Always test with other words in the family to be sure.
Patterns · الأَوْزَان / المِيزَان
Arabs weigh every single word against the master scale فَعَلَ — where F is letter 1, ʿ is letter 2, and L is letter 3. Change the mold, and the meaning shifts in an instant, predictable direction.
Mīzān Machine · آلَةُ المِيزَان
1 · Drop three letters in the soil (right to left)
2 · Choose a mold
3 · The word that grows
This machine shows the regular pattern mold. Keep in mind that weak roots (words containing letters like و ي ا ء) naturally shift and soften in Arabic speech — which makes for a fascinating conversation in class!
Virtually every verb you meet in the Quran sits on one of these ten branches. Once you recognize the branch, you can sense the meaning before you ever reach for a dictionary.
Āyah X-Ray · الآيَةُ بِالأَشِعَّة
Look at Surah Ibrahim 14:24 — the very ayah of the good tree. Tap any word to see its root and its family across the Quran. Fifteen words on the page. Only eleven roots.
“Do you not see how Allah sets forth a parable? A good word is like a good tree: its root is firm and its branch is in the sky.”

The Hook. Display a verse on screen with three words from the same root highlighted. Ask: “What do these three have in common?” Let students guess and debate.
Plant the Seed. Draw the tree on the board. Place the three letters down in the roots. Explain the core, physical picture in one short, vivid phrase (like ك ت ب = “leaving a lasting mark”).
Grow the Branches. Have students guess the words using the molds: فَاعِل (the doer), مَفْعُول (the one it's done to), مَفْعَل (the place), فَعِيل (the ongoing quality). Wrong guesses that make logical sense are fantastic learning moments.
The Leaf Hunt. In pairs, open the Mushaf to a selected page. Race to spot every word sharing today's root. The fastest pair reads their ayah out loud.
Quick Challenge. Play Root Relay or Odd Leaf Out (see the cards above). Fast-paced, high energy, and great teamwork.
Seed Bank & Personal Dua. Everyone fills out their notebook entry and composes one heartfelt personal dua using today's root (like يَا غَفُور، اغْفِرْ لِي). Exit check: identify the root in three quick words.

Knaggen. Vis et vers på skjermen med tre ord fra samme rot uthevet. Spør: «Hva har disse tre til felles?» La elevene resonnere.
Plant frøet. Tegn treet på tavlen. Skriv de tre bokstavene i jorden. Gi kjerneidéen med en kort setning (f.eks. ك ت ب = «å sette et varig merke»).
Avled ordene. Elevene fyller grenene med mønstrene: فَاعِل (den som gjør), مَفْعُول (den det gjøres mot), مَفْعَل (sted), فَعِيل (egenskap). Feil, men logiske svar er gull – drøft hvorfor språket valgte annerledes.
Bladjakt. Parvis åpner de Koranen på en bestemt side og finner hvert ord fra dagens rot. Raskeste par leser verset sitt høyt for klassen.
Lek og konkurranse. Rot-stafett eller Finn luringen (se kortene over). Høyt tempo, lagånd og poeng.
Frøbank + duʿāʾ. Alle fyller ut notatboken sin og skriver én bønn med dagens rot (f.eks. يَا غَفُور، اغْفِرْ لِي). Utsjekk: finn roten i 3 ord.
