Prophetic Whisper
“Fasting is a shield; when one of you is fasting, let him not speak improperly or act foolishly.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1894
🌙 Moon Phase Waxing Crescent
Next White Days in 4 days (13, 14, 15 Hijri)
Sūrat al‑Baqarah 183–187

Five āyāt. The whole
architecture of the fast.

The command, the exemption, the month, the nearness, and the two edges of the day — Allah placed them in one unbroken passage. Tap any āyah to copy it.

183Baqarah

“O you who have believed, fasting has been decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you — that you may become mindful of Allah.”

The purpose: taqwā, not hunger. An ancient worship, given to every people before us — you join a line that reaches back to the prophets.

184Baqarah

“A limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey — then an equal number of other days. And upon those who can bear it only with hardship — a ransom of feeding a poor person. And whoever volunteers good, it is better for him. And it is better for you that you fast, if only you knew.”

The mercy and the invitation: the excused are named here, and so is voluntary excess — tatawwuʿ. Every extra fast in this app rests on this word.

185Baqarah

“The month of Ramaḍān — in which the Qur'ān was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs of guidance and criterion… Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship — and that you complete the count, and magnify Allah for having guided you, and that you may be grateful.”

The month named: Ramaḍān is honoured because the Revelation descended in it — “in a blessed night” (44:3), Laylat al‑Qadr, “better than a thousand months” (97:3).

186Baqarah

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me — indeed I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be rightly guided.”

Placed deliberately: a verse about answered duʿāʾ dropped into the middle of the verses of fasting. “Three whose supplication is not refused — the fasting person until he breaks his fast.” (Ibn Mājah 1752) So ask, in the last minutes before iftār.

187Baqarah

“…and eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread; then complete the fast until night… These are the limits of Allah, so do not approach them.”

The two edges of the day: this āyah is the reason the orb above exists — suḥūr closes at Fajr, the fast completes at sunset. The night belongs to you; the day belongs to Him.

Yusr, not ʿusr

He never asked for
more than you can carry.

“Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.” (2:185) Fasting is worship, not endurance sport — the Qur'ān names the excused in the same breath as the command.

“…then an equal number of other days.” Keep the count honest — it is a debt of worship, not a shame.

Before you begin

The practical answers,
traced to their source.

Where the Qur'ān speaks, it is quoted. Where it is silent, the Sunnah explains. For anything specific to your body or country, ask a qualified scholar.

When does the fast begin, and when does it end?
“Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread; then complete the fast until night.” (2:187) So: from the entry of Fajr until sunset — not a minute earlier, not an hour later. The Prophet ﷺ hurried to break his fast and delayed suḥūr until close to dawn.
Is an intention (niyyah) required?
“Deeds are only by intentions.” (al‑Bukhārī 1) For an obligatory fast the intention is made during the night; for a voluntary fast the Prophet ﷺ would come home and say, “Do you have anything?” — and if not, “then I am fasting” (Muslim 1154). It is a resolve of the heart; no formula must be spoken aloud.
I ate or drank by accident — is my fast broken?
No. “Whoever forgets while fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast — Allah fed him.” (al‑Bukhārī 1933) And Allah says: “Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten…” (2:286)
Fasting as expiation — where does the Qur'ān mention it?
Three days for a broken oath (5:89) · three plus seven days for one prevented in Ḥajj (2:196) · two consecutive months for accidental killing (4:92) and for ẓihār (58:3–4) · an equivalent fast for hunting game in iḥrām (5:95). And Maryam عليها السلام was told to keep a ṣawm of silence (19:26) — the word itself means restraint.
Are there days one must not fast?
Yes. ʿĪd al‑Fiṭr and ʿĪd al‑Aḍḥā, and the days of tashrīq (11–13 Dhū al‑Ḥijjah) — “days of eating, drinking and remembrance of Allah” (Muslim 1141). Singling out Friday alone, or fasting every day of the year without break, is also discouraged. Ar‑Rayyān marks these in rose on the calendar.
What actually invalidates the reward?
“Whoever does not abandon false speech and acting upon it, Allah has no need of his leaving food and drink.” (al‑Bukhārī 1903) The purpose was stated at the outset — “that you may become mindful of Allah” (2:183). Hunger is the instrument; taqwā is the aim.
Where do the times and Hijri dates in this app come from?
Prayer times are computed astronomically from your coordinates (Fajr at 18°, Maghrib at sunset); Hijri dates use the Umm al‑Qurā calculation. Both are guides — moonsighting and your local masjid take precedence.
