By the sun and its brightness
An oath. Allah calls something forward as a witness. Something big is about to be said.
The first witness: the brightest thing in your sky. In Arabic, the sun is a “she”.
A second oath. Not “the bright sun”, but the sun, and then its light on its own. Two signs, not one.
Not the first glow of dawn. Not the burn of noon. The hour the light finally reaches everywhere.
A tiny word pointing back to the sun. Watch it echo through the next three verses.
Dawn is a promise. Noon is a furnace. In between is an hour when the sun has climbed just high enough for its light to spill into every valley and corner. Nothing hides from it. No one can deny it.
The word comes from a root meaning to come out into the open. This is the light Allah chose to swear by: clear, warm, and everywhere.
The sun is feminine in Arabic. That small هَا means her, and every one of the first four verses ends on it. Light and dark take turns, but every line keeps its eyes on her. Tap a line to see it in the sky.
We swear only by Allah. Allah swears by whatever He wills, and whatever He swears by, He wants you to look at closely. Like witnesses called before a ruling, this surah calls seven, one after another:
Six are out there, in the sky and on the earth. The seventh is inside you. The whole case has been about you.
After the sky and the earth, the oaths turn inward, to the soul and the One who shaped it with the same care. Your soul was made with its own light. Sins don’t destroy it. They cover it, the way night covers the sun. The light is still there.
Rub the darkness away. Stop, and watch it creep back.قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا
Whoever purifies it has succeeded, and whoever buries it has failed. (91:9–10)
And the moon? It glows at night only because it reflects the sun. A cleaned soul does the same: its light reaches others, even in the darkest hours. Keep polishing. The night always returns.
When the sun clears the rooftops and its light fills every street, that is ضُحَىٰ. Allah swore by that moment. Let it remind you of the light He placed in you, and keep it uncovered.
